The DAISY Award

We are proud to honor our outstanding nurses with the DAISY Award — an international recognition program that celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide to patients and families every day.

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes family was awestruck by the clinical skills and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this award to say thank-you to nurses everywhere.

About the DAISY Award

Anyone can nominate a nurse — patients, family members, visitors, physicians, staff members and volunteers — by sharing a story of the outstanding care the nurse provided. Each year, one extraordinary Johns Hopkins Community Physicians nurse will be selected to receive the DAISY Award by a committee of peers.

Each DAISY Award recipient will be recognized at ceremony and will receive a DAISY Award certificate, a DAISY Award lapel pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture titled A Healer’s Touch.

Meet Our Most Recent RecipientCatherine Davidson, R.N.

Catherine Davidson, R.N., nurse at our Howard County General Surgery practice, is the latest Johns Hopkins Community Physicians nurse to be honored with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Catherine is warm, thorough and takes her time with patients. One patient nominator recounts how during an emotional moment, Catherine offered her a tissue and reassured her that everything would be okay. "Sometimes it’s the simple, yet important, things that are overlooked, but that’s not the case with Catherine." Her nominators note that she is consistent, calm, caring and sensitive. Another patient nominator says, "I have had many nurses over a few decades and Catherine is a welcoming joy during sometimes painful times. She's amazing.”
