Limb Lengthening & Deformity Correction Program

At Johns Hopkins, our pediatric orthopaedic specialists offer high-quality care for children with common and rare limb deformities and limb differences. We treat children who were born with or later in life developed issues with the bones in the legs or arms, causing the limbs to be bowed, uneven or otherwise misshapen. Our team is skilled in advanced limb-lengthening and correction techniques to ensure your child receives the best care for their growing needs.

Conditions We Treat

We treat a wide range of hand, arm, leg and foot deformities in children, whether they were present from birth, occurred due to trauma or developed due to an underlying condition.

Our Treatment Approach

Consultation and Evaluation

When we meet with you and your child for the first time, we will review all the medical history, conduct a physical exam, talk to you about your child’s current symptoms and quality of life, and perform or order a few tests, such as range of motion or imaging studies.

Surgery

Depending on the type of deformity, surgery may be the best way to permanently correct it. Our surgeons are skilled in applying internal and external rods, plates and frames to help lengthen or straighten the affected limb.

Nonsurgical Treatments

We take advantage of bracing, shoe lifts, casting as well as physical and occupational therapy in cases when a deformity can be corrected without surgery, or when surgery needs to wait as your child keeps growing.

Monitoring and Follow-Up Care

Bones take a while to grow or straighten. During this time, your child may need physical therapy, psychological support, as well as instructions on how to care for any external frames. We provide you with all the resources you need and monitor your child’s progress to adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
