Background

Mona Kaleem, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute. She is a  fellowship trained glaucoma and cataract surgeon in Bethesda, Maryland. She is broadly trained in the medical and surgical care of glaucoma. Her excellence in patient care, teaching, and research activities resulted in her selection to the American Glaucoma Society. She was also selected by her peers as a Baltimore Magazine “Top Doctor” in 2018, 2019 and 2021. In 2020, Dr. Kaleem was honored with the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Achievement Award.

Dr. Kaleem was born and raised in Maryland. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Economics with double minors in Biology and Chemistry at Smith College prior to entering the Howard University College of Medicine. There, she was a Trustee Scholar and awardee of the Malcolm X Scholarship due to her leadership in community service. She completed her medical training at Mercy Medical Center, Howard University Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic.

She has a strong interest in volunteerism and has participated in medical missions globally and in underserved areas within the United States. Dr. Kaleem is also known for her involvement in grass roots legislative efforts that impact the way that ophthalmology care is delivered and received in the United States.

She is one of the hosts of the Diagnosis Glaucoma podcast and co-authored the book Glaucoma: What Every Patient Should Know with Dr. Harry Quigley.
