Background
Nirav K. Patel, M.D., M.S., F.R.C.S., is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement, with expertise in sports medicine. He has experience in treating young and older adults who have hip and knee injuries, arthritis, fractures and related conditions, as well as in performing a variety of joint replacement and more complex revision procedures.
Dr. Patel earned his medical degree with honors from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom (U.K.), and he completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Imperial College London. He then traveled to the U.S., where he completed several orthopaedic fellowships, including an adult reconstruction fellowship at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond and a sports medicine fellowship at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. After finishing his training, Dr. Patel returned to VCU, where he was an orthopaedic hip and knee surgeon and was heavily involved in resident and fellow education. He obtained a promotion there to associate professor of orthopaedic surgery.
Dr. Patel also has a master’s degree in sports medicine from the University of Bath in the U.K., and he has more than 10 years of experience in providing medical coverage for sports events and teams. In the U.K., he was an event doctor for races and soccer teams. In the U.S., Dr. Patel was an assistant team physician in Philadelphia for the Eagles (NFL), Flyers (NHL), Phillies (MLB) and 76ers (NBA).
Dr. Patel’s research focuses on minimizing risks associated with hip and knee surgery, with an emphasis on preoperative optimization and enhancing recovery, including risk management techniques such as opioid-sparing surgery and strategies to help patients return to sports after joint replacement. He co-authored numerous research publications on these topics, and he has received awards for presenting his findings during national and international conferences. He is a member of the editorial board for The Journal of Arthroplasty, and he was the co-chair of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society annual meeting in 2023. Dr. Patel is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, among other professional organizations.
