Wheelchair and Equipment Evaluation
We work with patients and families to meet a child’s adaptive equipment needs as he or she grows.
We evaluate children of all ages, including newborns, to determine the wheelchair and other equipment to best meet their needs and help them achieve the most mobility and function possible.
Our team will recommend equipment to promote your child’s independence and mobility. We may also recommend additional services to help your child develop functional skills to make the best possible use of their equipment.
We provide equipment for patients with diagnoses that may include:
- Amputation
- Autism
- Cancer
- Cerebral palsy
- Intellectual disability
- Muscular dystrophy
- Osteogenesis imperfecta
- Spina bifida
- Stroke
- Traumatic brain injury
Each child is evaluated by an interdisciplinary team that includes an occupational therapist and physical therapist from Johns Hopkins All Children’s and a trained adaptive seating specialist from a community vendor selected by the family and that works with the patient’s funding source. The team works together with the patient and family to identify the child’s current and potential future equipment needs.
The team provides a formal report with detailed recommendations of the equipment determined most appropriate from your child’s evaluation. We send the formal report to you, your referring physician, and to the child’s health care funding source. Equipment we may recommend for your child can include:
- Adaptive car seats
- Adaptive stroller
- Bathing/toileting equipment
- Gait trainer
- Hospital bed
- Lifting equipment
- Manual or power wheelchair
- Positioning equipment
- Stander
- Walker
During the evaluation we will:
- Review your child’s current equipment and transportation
- Review your child’s current functional status, including mobility in and out of the chair, daily activities and movement throughout the natural environment
- Review of your child’s regular environments, including home, school, work and community-based activities
Follow-up care
After the evaluation, we will schedule a custom seating molding as needed. When the equipment arrives, we will schedule a delivery appointment to check for correct fit and performance, make any adjustments or modifications, and teach you and your child how to use and take care of the equipment. You may also contact us later as needed to make appointments for any necessary adjustments as your child grows.
